We’re Not Just Living… We’re Planting
Here’s a reality we don’t think about a lot:
We don’t just live our lives.
We’re planting our lives.
And if we’re being honest, most of the time we don’t even realize we’re doing it.
We’ve been talking about thoughts.
We’ve been talking about words.
We’ve been talking about the narratives we agree with.
And I’ve gotta tell you—this whole conversation has had me checking myself more than ever… what I’m thinking, what I’m saying, what I’m letting run on repeat in my head.
Because it’s not always easy.
Holding every thought captive like Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians…
Renewing our minds like Romans 12:2 says…
That’s not a one-and-done thing.
But I’ll tell you this—it is the way I choose to live.
Because what we speak and think?
That’s what we’re agreeing with.
Even when we think we’re just casually talking.
The Law of the Seed
So let’s head over to Galatians 6:7:
A man reaps what he sows.
Sounds simple… but wow, it goes deep.
And here’s what I love about this:
Even though Galatians was written in Greek, this idea is rooted in a Hebrew way of thinking.
All throughout the Old Testament, life is seen like a field.
Everything is agricultural.
Nothing is random.
Nothing is instant (even though we wish it was… right? 😄)
And everything grows—over time.
It Starts Where You Can’t See It
There’s a Hebrew word often used for sowing: zara
It means: to scatter seed… to plant… to conceive something that will grow.
Did you catch that last part?
To conceive.
Which means planting isn’t just external—it’s internal.
It starts in a place you can’t even see yet.
What You Rehearse, You Root
And then there’s another word tied to our thought life: haga
It means: to murmur… to speak under your breath… to rehearse something over and over.
It’s the same word Scripture uses when it talks about meditating on God’s Word.
So when you put those together, here’s what you get:
What you rehearse internally… eventually gets planted deeply.
And what gets planted… grows.
This Is Where It Gets Real
Now let’s bring that into everyday life.
Every time you keep thinking:
“I’m stuck.”
“Nothing is changing.”
“This is just how it’s always going to be.”
“I’ll always be sick.”
“I’ll never fulfill what God put in me to accomplish.”
You’re not just having a moment.
You’re planting something.
The Grasshopper Narrative
And this is exactly what we’ve been talking about with the Israelites in Numbers 13–14.
The spies didn’t just see giants.
They rehearsed the problem.
They talked about it.
They repeated it.
They agreed with it.
And out of that came a narrative that never once matched what God said:
“We are like grasshoppers…”
That didn’t just appear out of nowhere.
They created that belief based on what they saw—
instead of anchoring themselves in who God said they were
and what He said He was giving them.
See how fast that happens?
How quickly the narrative shifts when fear grabs the mic?
What Are You Sowing Into?
Now look back at Galatians 6:7:
“You will always harvest what you plant.” (NLT)
That means this:
You don’t just experience life…
you’re planting into it.
And the seeds you plant aren’t just your actions—
they’re your thoughts, your words, and what you keep agreeing with.
Because whatever you keep feeding…
eventually grows.
So when Scripture talks about sowing, it’s not just about your behavior.
It’s about what you’re aligning your heart and mind with.
Are you feeding fear?
Replaying what’s not working?
Agreeing with the worst-case narrative?
That’s still sowing.
But sowing into the Spirit?
That looks like:
agreeing with God’s truth
speaking what God said
choosing a different narrative
Even when it feels unnatural.
It Might Feel Awkward… Do It Anyway
And let’s be honest…
Nine times out of ten—it will feel unnatural.
Speaking the opposite of what you see?
That can feel awkward at first.
But friend… it’s the only way to live.
Don’t Quit Before the Harvest
Because growth takes time.
Seeds don’t show up overnight.
But listen to this promise in Galatians 6:9:
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Whew… that’s good.
So Here’s the Question
What have you been planting lately?
Not what you hope will grow.
Not what you want to happen.
But what are you consistently:
Thinking…
Saying…
Rehearsing…
Because that right there—that’s your seed.
Start Planting Something Different
And if you realize you’ve been planting the wrong things?
Don’t beat yourself up.
Just start planting something different.
One thought at a time.
One word at a time.
One agreement at a time.
Final Thought
Because your life is a field.
And whether you realize it or not…
You’re always planting something.
