The Invisible Stick: Stop Beating Yourself Up
Let’s talk about something we all do but never really want to admit: beating ourselves up. You know the drill. You mess up, fall into an old habit, or drop the ball on something important, and suddenly, that inner voice starts going off: Why did you do that? You’ll never get it right. What’s wrong with you? Sound familiar?
I’ve been there—more times than I care to count. It’s like this cycle of guilt and shame that keeps us spinning our wheels, and instead of helping us move forward, it leaves us stuck. But here’s the truth I’ve had to remind myself over and over: beating yourself up isn’t helping. It’s holding you back.
God’s View of Your Failures
Here’s the incredible part: God doesn’t see your failures the way you do. He’s not looking at you and shaking His head waving an invisible stick, saying, Wow, you really blew it this time. Instead, His Word tells us something radically different. Psalm 103:12 (NLT) says, "He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west." Think about that. He doesn’t just forgive your mistakes; He separates them from you completely. If God’s not holding onto your past, why are you?
And then there’s Romans 8:1 (NLT): "So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." No condemnation. None. Not even a little bit. If the God of the universe isn’t condemning you, why do you keep condemning yourself?
Why Beating Yourself Up Doesn’t Work
Let’s get real about what happens when you let that inner critic run wild:
You Get Stuck in the Past. Instead of moving forward, you replay the mistake on a loop. Growth requires movement, not staying stuck in regret.
You Lose Confidence. When you keep telling yourself you’re not good enough, you start to believe it.
You Miss the Bigger Picture. God’s plan isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Fixating on your failures makes you lose sight of the journey He’s leading you on.
How to Break Free
So how do you stop beating yourself up and start stepping into the life God has for you? Here are some steps that have helped me:
Own It, but Don’t Stay There. Acknowledge what happened. Say, "I messed up, but this doesn’t define me."Proverbs 24:16 (NLT) says, "The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again." Falling isn’t failure; refusing to get up is.
Talk to God About It. Lay it all out there. "God, I blew it, and I need Your help." He’s not shocked by your mistakes. In fact, 1 John 1:9 (NLT) promises, "But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness." He’s ready to forgive and help you move forward.
Change the Narrative. Stop repeating lies to yourself. Instead of saying, "I’ll never get it right," declare Philippians 4:13 (NLT): "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Speak God’s truth over yourself.
Learn and Adjust. Every mistake is a lesson if you’re willing to learn from it. What led to this moment? What can you do differently next time? Treat it as a stepping stone, not a stumbling block.
Celebrate Small Wins. You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to celebrate progress. Galatians 6:9 (NLT) reminds us, "So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up." Keep going—small steps add up.
Moving Forward
Here’s what I want you to take away: You are not your mistakes. You are human, and you are loved. The next time you start spiraling into self-criticism, pause and remind yourself of this truth: God’s not done with me yet.
Isaiah 43:18-19 (NLT) says, "But forget all that—it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?" God’s not dwelling on your past failures, and neither should you. He’s already working on your future.
So, let today be the day you stop beating yourself up. Instead, choose grace. Choose growth. Get back up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward. God’s got big plans for you, and He’s walking with you every step of the way. Remember…every single day is a brand new blank sheet of paper.
