Ever feel like being a “good Christian” comes with a never-ending to-do list? Read the Bible every day (but also don’t skim it), pray for at least 27 minutes (because five minutes is clearly slacking), serve in church (but don’t overcommit or you’ll burn out), and of course, make sure you never, ever miss a Sunday… lest your spiritual report card gets a big fat incomplete.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve convinced ourselves that God is handing out gold stars for perfect attendance and docked points for wearing jeans to church. But let’s be real—is that actually what He cares about?
Now, don’t get me wrong as being in ministry has been a part of my entire life—things like church, worship, prayer, and time in God’s Word matter deeply. These aren’t just ‘religious’ routines; they are lifelines that help us grow in faith, keep our hearts aligned with God, and deepen our relationship with Him. But if we treat them like a spiritual ‘performance’ checklist, we risk missing the whole point.
The Checklist We Think Matters
Here’s the kind of list that many of us (secretly) keep in the back of our minds:
✅ Go to church every Sunday (bonus points for midweek service)
✅ Have a Bible so worn out it looks like it survived the flood
✅ Pray using words like “thee” and “thou” for extra spiritual credit
✅ Only listen to worship music (and feel guilty when your ‘80s throwback playlist comes on)
✅ Share at least one Bible verse on social media per week
✅ Never have doubts, struggles, or moments where your faith feels weak
We strive, we stress, we perform… and then we wonder why we still feel exhausted and spiritually drained.
But here’s the truth: Reverence for God isn’t about performance—it’s about a heart that truly seeks Him.
What God Actually Cares About
God isn’t interested in how well we “play the part” of a Christian. He’s after something much deeper—our hearts and how we live out our faith in real, everyday ways.
Here’s what actually matters to Him:
Love Him First – Matthew 22:37
God isn’t measuring our faith by how many devotionals we complete. He just wants us to truly know and love Him - He wants our undivided attention—not out of duty, but from a heart that longs for Him.
Love Others Well – John 13:34
Faith isn’t just about what we know; it’s about how we live. Loving people—even when it’s hard—is one of the biggest ways we honor God.
Talk to Him, For Real – Philippians 4:6
Prayer isn’t about perfect words; it’s about real relationship. God wants us to invite Him into our everyday lives, not just check off a prayer box.
Let Go of the Performance Act – Isaiah 29:13
God sees past the motions. He desires worship from the heart, not just outward routines. Reverence isn’t about being “put together”—it’s about humbling ourselves before Him.
Trust Him Even When It’s Hard – Proverbs 3:5-6
Faith is built on surrender, not control. God isn’t asking for perfection—He’s asking us to trust Him, even when we don’t have all the answers.
Take Care of Those in Need – James 1:27, Proverbs 19:17
True faith shows up in how we treat others. God makes it clear that taking care of widows, orphans, and the poor is part of what real worship looks like. It’s not an optional “extra”—it’s central to His heart.
Build Your Faith on Relationship, Not Just Routine
Yes, church, worship, prayer, and reading the Bible are absolutely essential. But they aren’t about earning spiritual credit; they’re about staying rooted in Him in RELATIONSHIP. If we’re just going through the motions to check off a list, we’re missing the point.
So, What Now?
Maybe it’s time to drop the pressure and stop trying to impress our Heavenly Father who was never asking us to in the first place. Worship, prayer, church, and service are all EXTREMELY vital—but not because they earn us favor. They’re how we grow in love, obedience, and reverence for Him.
Faith isn’t about how many times you show up—it’s about who you’re becoming as you do.
So go ahead, take a breath. You don’t have to earn His love. You already have it. Now, just live from it.
