Mom on a Mission: Fighting for Our Kids
I don’t know about you, but as I look around at what’s happening in the world, especially in the lives of our kids—whether they’re still at home or out in the big wide world like mine—I’m seeing the enemy trying to fast-track deceit, lies, and division straight into their lives. And can I just say…this mama? I am not okay with that.
Week after week, I hear from friends—parents just like us—sharing how their kids are getting pulled away from the truth, lured by what the world calls "freedom" and "happiness." And, yeah, at first, it might look like everything they ever wanted. But deep down, we know it’s a trap. That’s how the enemy operates—he’s got this sneaky way of making his path look bright, fun, and fulfilling until it devours you. Jesus knew what this looked like, too. In Luke 4:1-13, after fasting for 40 days, when he was tired, weak, and hungry, the enemy tried every temptation possible. But here’s the key—Jesus didn’t cave.
You ever think about why? I mean, yes, He’s Jesus, but there’s something more. He had a weapon we have access to too: God’s Word. That’s what He used to fight back, even at His weakest. And if God’s own Son turned to Scripture to fight the enemy, then we, too, should pick up the same weapon in our battle for our kids.
When I Learned the Power of God's Word
Flashback with me to when I was 19. I was working the night shift at a nursing home and living with a friend in her childhood home. The moment I moved in, I knew something was off, something heavy was in that house. I’d never felt anything like it. The master bedroom—the only place I felt peace—was my sanctuary. But every other part of the house felt oppressive, like there was something there watching me. Footsteps that you could hear walking across the roof had no source, banging on windows with no one there—I could feel this darkness hanging in the air.
At first, I tried to shake it off. I’d call my boyfriend, and he’d stay on the phone with me as I slept. But it wasn’t until one evening when he came over and heard those footsteps for himself that he believed me.
One day, I shared what was happening with my mom. Now, if you knew my mom, you’d know she didn’t mess around. My parents were missionaries overseas in Spain, and knew immediately knew what to do: “Tracee, you need to anoint that house with oil and pray the blood of Jesus over it.” I didn’t have any anointing oil, so I grabbed some vegetable oil from the kitchen, prayed, and started anointing the whole house. Room by room, I called on the power of Jesus over every single room. And guess what? That dark presence vanished. Just like that. Never heard another footstep, no more window banging, no more creepy lurking down the hall. Gone.
But here’s where it gets even crazier.
When I was talking to my roommate about all of this, there was one room I had never felt safe even to open the door to—it was directly across from the master bedroom. It was the room her sister used to live in before heading off to college. Something about that room made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and every time I sat in the dining room nearby, I felt like I was being watched by something dark.
After I told my roommate about praying over the house, I felt this surge of courage rise up, and I said, “Let’s open the door and see what’s in that room.”
The room itself was mostly empty, which surprised me—at first. But then we opened the closet, and there it was: satanic books, paraphernalia, and who knows what else. We stood there, frozen for a moment, shocked at what we were looking at. No wonder we had been fighting such a heavy, oppressive presence in that house.
Without hesitation, I ran to the kitchen, grabbed some paper bags, and started throwing everything into them. Every book, every piece of it—gone. By the time we were done, there were two full trash bags of darkness that we dragged outside and threw away. And let me tell you, once that stuff was gone, the house felt lighter, freer. Peace finally filled every corner.
That day, I realized this fight isn’t against flesh and blood. It’s spiritual, and we have to show up ready to battle. And while I didn’t fully understand it at the time, God was teaching me how to stand firm in His power and authority.
How This Connects to Our Kids
Fast forward to today, and it’s so clear to me that the battle I fought in that house isn’t all that different from the battle we’re fighting for our kids. What they’re facing isn’t just cultural pressures or bad influences—it’s a spiritual war. The enemy doesn’t just want to distract our kids; he wants to destroy their faith, their identity, and their future.
Think about it: the enemy uses things that seem harmless—ideas, trends, social media, even relationships—to gain a foothold. Just like the dark presence in that house, it’s subtle at first, creeping in through doors we didn’t even know were open. And if we’re not vigilant, if we’re not standing in the gap for our kids, it can take root and wreak havoc.
This is why we can’t just fight with words or actions. We have to fight in the spiritual realm. Just like I anointed that house and prayed the blood of Jesus over every room, we need to cover our kids in prayer. We need to speak God’s promises over their lives, claim His protection, and fight back against the darkness trying to invade their hearts and minds.
The same tools God gave me back then—His Word, prayer, and the authority of Jesus—are what we need now. The battle is real, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. But here’s the good news: we serve a God who is greater.
How Do We Fight for Our Kids?
The struggles our kids face—anxiety, depression, confusion, anger—are more than what meets the eye. This isn’t something we can fix with pep talks or grounding them from their phones. This is war.
And war? It’s exhausting. But, Mama, it’s worth it. Our kids—whether they’re toddlers, teens, or adults—are worth every ounce of energy we’ve got.
So, how do we fight? We fight the same way I fought for that house all those years ago: with prayer, Scripture, and the name of Jesus. We suit up in the armor of God every day (Ephesians 6:10-18) and step into the trenches.
Let me be real—it’s not easy. There are days when you’ll feel like giving up. Days when it feels like nothing’s changing. But don’t quit. When you feel weak, lean into Jesus who never runs out of strength. Because here’s the truth: the enemy doesn’t get to win. Not on my watch. And not on yours either.
Let’s Start Right Here
Maybe you’re reading this, and you’re tired. Your faith feels paper-thin, and you’re not sure you’ve got it in you to keep fighting. I get it. But let me remind you—showing up matters. Even if all you can do is whisper a prayer, it matters. God hears you. He sees you. And He will fight for you and your kids.
Here’s a prayer I’ve been clinging to lately—one that helps me stand firm in faith when the battle feels overwhelming:
Today's Prayer
Father, help me walk by faith, not by what I see. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Thank You for grounding me in Your love and living within me. (Galatians 2:20)
Without faith, it’s impossible to please You, and I want to please You, Lord. Strengthen my belief in Your promises. (Hebrews 11:6)
Forgive me for the times I’ve let doubt creep in. Today, I choose to trust You. (Mark 16:12-14, Hebrews 11:1)
Teach me to use the shield of faith to protect my family and stand against the enemy’s attacks. (Ephesians 6:16)
In Jesus’ name, I break the stronghold of fear and unbelief. I choose faith over fear. AMEN.
Mama, this is our time to rise up. If God is for us, who can be against us? No one. Not even the enemy himself. So grab your Bible, pick up your faith, and let’s go to war for our kids. Together, let’s stand in the gap and watch God do what only He can do.

My faith is kind of shattered at the moment, but this really spoke to my heart. I may only have a mustard seed of faith at the moment but I'm praying crazy prayers over my entire family and asking God for the impossible. How else does He prove it is He alone who makes the impossible possible? People will think I'm crazy. Well, that's OK with me. I know my God is bigger than ANYTHING!
