Part 5: Lies That Fuel the Fire
What anxiety tries to convince you of—and the truth that breaks it down.
Anxiety doesn’t always scream.
Sometimes it whispers.
And the lies it tells? They’re subtle. Strategic.
They creep in beneath the surface, weaving themselves into your thoughts until they feel like truth.
“You’re not safe.”
“You’re too much.”
“You’re too broken.”
“You should be over this by now.”
“No one really sees you.”
“This will never get better.”
“God’s disappointed in you.”
Sound familiar?
They don’t always hit all at once—but when they do, they fuel the fire.
And the longer they’re left unchallenged, the louder they get.
I’ve heard those lies.
Sometimes in moments of silence.
Sometimes in crowded rooms.
Sometimes in the dead of night when everything is quiet—except the noise in my head.
And here’s the thing:
The lies sound true when you’re tired.
They feel real when you’re triggered.
They gain ground when you're disconnected from truth.
I’ll never forget standing in a dressing room at Kohl’s, staring at my reflection and tearing myself apart one word at a time. I wasn’t just trying on clothes—I was trying on shame, comparison, and disappointment. And the longer I stood there, the more anxious I felt. Not panicky… but unsettled. Like something wasn’t right, and I couldn’t breathe deep enough to make it better.
That’s what lies do.
They may start as thoughts, but when we speak them—even if it’s just to ourselves—they plant something. They stir up shame. They steal peace. They spark anxiety.
And then God (can we say, Hallelujah!) interrupted that spiral with one simple, piercing truth:
“Tracee, the very words you are speaking to yourself are contradicting who I say you are.”
Boom.
Conviction. Grace. Love. Peace. All in one breath.
That moment shifted something in me.
I realized I wasn’t just dealing with surface-level insecurity—
I was fueling the fire of anxiety by agreeing with lies that didn’t come from the mouth of God.
That’s when it hit me—anxiety isn’t always triggered by what’s around me.
Sometimes, it’s lit by the words I’ve believed and spoken over myself.
And that’s why learning to fight back with truth is vitally important.
Because words carry weight—and only one voice brings life.
The Lies Anxiety Tries to Sell You (and the Truth That Breaks Them)
Lie: “You’re not safe.”
Truth: “The Lord is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91:2 - You are covered. You are surrounded. You are held.
Lie: “You’re not good enough.”
Truth: “I created you in My image.” – Genesis 1:27
God didn’t make a mistake with your personality, your voice, or your presence.
Lie: “This season will never change.”
Truth: “I am doing a new thing—do you not perceive it?” – Isaiah 43:19
Breakthrough doesn’t always look dramatic. But it starts with believing that He’s still working.
Lie: “You’re too far gone.”
Truth: “He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.” – Philippians 1:6 - Healing is a process—but it’s happening.
Lie: “God’s disappointed in you.”
Truth: “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 8:1
His mercy doesn’t run out. His love is not based on your performance.
More often than not, the biggest shift happens not when the circumstances change, but when the inner narrative does.
That’s why God’s Word matters.
It’s not about quickly stuffing verses into your day—it’s about replacing lies with the truth by truly meditating on the promises of God.
You can’t fight a thought you never identify. And you can’t win a battle without the right weapon and that weapon is God’s Word.
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
—2 Corinthians 10:5
Your Truth Step This Week:
Write down 3 lies anxiety tries to tell you.
Then, write down a verse of truth to speak back to each one.
Say it out loud.
Even if your hands shake.
Even if you don’t fully believe it yet.
One of my favorite heroes of the faith from the last century is Kenneth Hagin. He used to say, “I keep preaching on faith because people still haven’t gotten it.” And I feel the same way about learning how to exchange lies for God’s truth. If we aren’t putting truth on repeat in our everyday life, the lies won’t back off. But when we keep speaking God’s Word—when we put that on repeat—anxiety starts to lose its voice. The truth of God doesn’t just drown out the lies... it replaces them.
So, what do we do?
Go on repeat—even on the days it takes effort to believe.
Even when your voice shakes. Even when you only halfway ‘feel’ it.
Even when anxiety is louder than your clarity.
God’s Word isn’t just comfort—it’s a sword that breaks through the battle.
It doesn’t coddle the lies. It cuts them down. It defeats the giants.
And speaking it out loud?
That’s spiritual warfare.
That’s how we shut down the whispers that try to convince us we’re still stuck.
That’s how we silence the scripts that try to steal our peace and hijack our identity.
These days, when anxiety creeps in, I come back to this:
“Not today, Satan. Not anymore. You don’t get to talk over the voice of God.”
This is why digging into the Word daily matters.
It’s why we can’t just be surface-level believers of faith who crack a verse when life falls apart—we’ve got to be rooted. Anchored. Lit up from within by the power of God’s Word.
When we read the Bible, we’re activating God’s Word into our life.
Because the more of Jesus we dive into—
the less the lies have room to breathe.
This is what the Faith Study Library I’ve been working on was started for.
To help you cultivate a lifestyle of activated faith—where Scripture isn’t just read, it’s lived. Where truth isn’t just highlighted, it’s spoken, prayed, declared, and applied.
Because when faith is active, anxiety loses momentum.
Let this be your charge today:
Don’t just hear God’s truth—hold on to it and BELIEVE it.
Don’t just study it—use it.
And don’t let the lies have the last word.
Jesus already spoke the final Word:
It is finished.
