Some people talk about faith like it’s a muscle you just flex on demand. Like the moment God calls you to do something big, you should be able to throw on your superhero cape, strike a power pose, and say, "Yes, Lord! No hesitation! I’m ready!"
Honestly, that’s the ‘walk by faith’ goal, right?
But for most of us? Faith looks a little messier.
I imagine Gideon would nod his head at that and say, “Have I got a story to tell you!”
If you don’t know Gideon’s story, let me introduce you (Judges 6-8). He’s the guy God handpicks to lead an army and take down the Midianites. Except—there’s a small problem. When God calls him, Gideon isn’t exactly rallying the troops or sharpening his sword. No, he’s hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat like a man avoiding eye contact with responsibility.
And that’s exactly where the angel of the Lord finds him.
"Mighty warrior!" the angel declares (Judges 6:12).
I can almost hear Gideon snorting. Mighty warrior? You mean the guy currently ducking for cover while handling farm chores? You sure you’ve got the right guy?
God, however, is serious. He tells Gideon, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel. I am sending you."
And Gideon’s response? Classic.
"Uh… Lord, are You sure? Because I am the weakest, the least qualified, and did I mention I’m currently hiding?"
What follows is one of the most relatable faith struggles in the Bible—Gideon needing sign after sign before he’s willing to move. First, he asks for fire on an altar (God does it). Then, he lays out a fleece and asks God to make it wet while the ground stays dry (God does that too). Just to be extra sure, he flips the request—this time, fleece dry, ground wet. (And yes, God does it again.)
At this point, I can just imagine the Lord shaking his head with a slight grin, like, “Son, how many signs do you need?”
But here’s the beautiful thing—God didn’t get mad at Gideon’s hesitation. He didn’t write him off for needing confirmation. He met him in his doubt, reassured him, and ultimately, used him mightily.
And you know what? That gives me hope.
Because let’s be real—sometimes faith doesn’t look like an instant yes.
Sometimes, it looks like me, pacing the living room with my arms crossed, telling God, "I just need to be absolutely sure before I jump into this, Lord."
Or me standing at the kitchen sink, muttering under my breath, "You’re not really asking me to take this leap, right?"
Or, “Let me check my bank account one more time to see if it’s possible.”
Or me checking my phone for some kind of unexpected confirmation, because Gideon wasn’t the only one who needed a fleece test.
Faith Isn’t Always Instant—But It’s Always Worth It
Maybe you’re standing at your own crossroads, staring at a big decision, and feeling more Gideon than Abraham. Maybe you’re thinking:
"I don’t have the kind of faith that just jumps."
"What if I get this wrong?"
"Can I get one more confirmation before I step out?"
Let me tell you—God is not afraid of your hesitations. He’s not impatient with your questions. He meets us in those moments, just like He met Gideon.
And at some point, after all the signs and reassurances, you’ll find yourself at the same place Gideon did.
The moment when you take a deep breath, step forward, and say, "Alright, Lord. Let’s do this."
And that’s when the real adventure begins.
So whether you’re the type to jump immediately or the one standing in the corner making fleece requests, just remember: God isn’t just calling you—He’s already preparing the way.
And when you finally take that step?
Oh, my friend. It’s going to be worth it.
Now, go find your faith shoes… and maybe a U-Haul. Just in case.
