Goodbye, Old Jeans—Hello, New Beginnings
Learning to Clear Out the Clutter and Step Into What’s Next
Sometimes, stepping into a new year feels a lot like cleaning out your closet. You know the drill—you open the door, and there it is: a mix of stuff you love, stuff you forgot you had, and stuff you’re honestly embarrassed to admit you’re still holding on to. Like that pair of jeans from 12 years ago that you promised you’re going to fit back into one day. (Spoiler alert: you probably won’t, and that’s okay. And yes, I’m guilty of having these jeans in my closet as we speak.)
This is how I picture the end of a year—a spiritual closet clean-out. As I reflect on the past twelve months, I find myself taking inventory of what’s in there. Some things—like regrets, missed opportunities, or unhealthy habits—are like those jeans that don’t fit anymore. They’re taking up space, and honestly, it’s time to let them go. Then there are the treasures—the lessons God used to grow me, the challenges that stretched me, and the blessings I didn’t even realize I was holding onto. Those are the keepers, the ones worth carrying into the new year.
And this is one of the things I’ve come to love about a new year: it’s like God handing us a fresh opportunity to grow, to refocus, and to reflect. It’s not just about what we’re leaving behind but also about what we’re taking forward. Where did we struggle? Where did we grow? What lessons—especially spiritual ones—can we bring with us into the year ahead?
This process excites me because I’ve realized each year builds on the last. God doesn’t waste a thing. Every challenge, every lesson, and every victory becomes another block in the foundation of faith He’s been building in me. And I won’t lie—some of the prayers I’ve been praying for 2025 scare me. They’re bold, bigger-than-me prayers that require a faith stronger than I’ve ever needed before. But here’s the truth: God has been preparing me for this. Each year, He’s teaching me what to let go of and what to hold onto, so that I can step into what’s next with confidence.
Let me ask you this: What’s in your spiritual closet? Are you holding onto things that don’t fit anymore—spiritually or otherwise? Are there treasures God’s given you this year that you might’ve overlooked? What lessons from 2024 are you ready to bring into 2025 to help you face what’s ahead?
Let’s do this together—clean out the clutter, hold onto the good, and step boldly into what God has planned for us in 2025.
And if you’re still hanging onto those jeans, it’s okay. Just maybe fold them nicely and let them go. The space they free up might be exactly what you need to make room for something better.
Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT):
“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
