Part 7 – God Lights Up Our Darkness
Psalm 18:27–32 | Wide Open Spaces Series
I’ve never faced the kind of enemies David did—real armies, battlefields, constant threats to his life. But that doesn’t mean I can’t relate (sort of…ha!).
Yet, I have walked through spiritual battles that felt overwhelming.
Emotional nights that were very dark.
Seasons where the weight of the fight felt impossible.
And what I’ve learned—through tears, prayer, and sometimes crawling—lines up with every word of Psalm 18.
This chapter reveals a God who meets us where we are…
but also moves us into where He knows we’re meant to be.
Heart Posture Still Matters (Psalm 18:25–27)
“To the faithful you show yourself faithful… You rescue the humble…”
This is where we left off in Part 6:
God responds to the posture of our heart.
And that truth flows into every verse that follows.
Yes, He’ll respond when we cry out to Him.
But if we want to see the fullness of His rescue, we also need to ask:
Where is my heart really positioned?
Because the tighter we cling to our pride…
the more buried we are in busy, fear, anxiety, or bitterness…
the less room we leave for God to move.
Let it go.
Whatever it’s wrapped in—hand it over.
Because the God of Psalm 18 isn’t just watching from a distance.
He’s ready to step in—if you’ll open the door.
He Lights Up the Darkness (Psalm 18:28)
“You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.”
This isn’t a basic light switch.
This is presence. This is personal. This is relational.
God doesn’t just hand you a flashlight and hope you find your way—He enters the dark with you and lights it up Himself.
And He does it not because you’ve figured everything out…
but because He loves you too much to leave you there.
He Gives Strength for the Impossible (Psalm 18:29)
“In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall.”
You don’t have to hype yourself up for what’s ahead.
David wasn’t boasting—he was testifying.
God’s strength turns our limitations into launch pads.
That “wall” in front of you? The one that feels too high, too scary, too unknown?
You’re not stuck.
You’re just one God-powered step away from going over it.
He Covers You With Proven Promises (Psalm 18:30)
“God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true…”
People will let you down. Life will throw curveballs.
But God’s Word? It’s never once failed.
If He said He’ll protect you—He will.
If He promised to guide you—He’s already ahead of you.
The safest place to stand isn’t in control.
It’s behind His shield.
He’s the Rock That Doesn’t Crack (Psalm 18:31)
“Who but our God is a solid rock?”
When everything else shakes—your plans, your people, your peace—
God doesn’t.
He’s not flaky. He’s not fragile. He’s not going anywhere.
He is your steady, solid, unmovable Rock.
So when you don’t know where to place your foot next—
place it on Him.
He Doesn’t Just Call You—He Equips You (Psalm 18:32)
“God arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect.”
You’re not walking this life empty-handed.
God doesn’t just say “Go”—He equips you before you move.
Your road might not be easy, but it will be right.
Strategic. Covered. Grace-lined.
And the best part?
He doesn’t just send you… He sends you ready so hold onto your faith in who HE says HE is.
We’re seeing something beautiful unfold in Psalm 18.
This isn’t a chapter about a perfect life—it’s about a faithful God who meets us in the middle of the fight, in the dark, in the uphill climb.
But it all begins with the posture of our heart.
Are we giving Him access?
Are we letting go of what’s been wrapping us up too tight?
Because when we do, we begin to experience what David did—
a God who lights the way, strengthens our steps, covers us in truth, and arms us for what’s next.
