Faith Without a Map: When God Calls You to Step Out
Ever felt like God was nudging you toward something that made zero sense? Like He was handing you a one-way ticket to "somewhere" with no itinerary, no roadmap, just a simple, "Trust Me." Well, that’s exactly where Abraham found himself.
In Genesis 12:1, God told Abraham, "Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you."
Notice what God didn’t give Abraham—a map, an itinerary, or even a final destination. He simply said, Go.
When Faith Looks Like a Blank Page
Imagine packing up everything you own, saying goodbye to everything familiar, and heading out with no GPS coordinates—just a promise from God. That’s exactly what Abraham did. He walked in faith, not knowing where the road would take him but trusting the One who called him.
Faith often looks like that. Our human nature wants step-by-step instructions, but God often gives us just enough direction for the next step. It’s uncomfortable. It stretches us. But it’s also where God does His best work in us.
I was talking with someone recently in a mentoring session, and she said, "When God tells me something is coming, I want the full details—every step mapped out—because He knows I don't like surprises. That just doesn't work for me." And I had to laugh because, really, who does like being left in the dark? But here’s the truth: God doesn’t work that way. Even though He knows our preferences, He isn’t in the business of giving us a full itinerary. If He did, we’d never learn to truly trust Him.
Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about learning to trust God when you have none. And that’s part of this whole journey: stepping forward when you don’t know what comes next, believing that God does.
The Tension Between Trust and Uncertainty
Let’s be honest here as I realize faith like this is not easy. We like control. We like knowing the outcome before we step out. But faith without action isn’t really faith at all. James 2:17 tells us, "So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless."
Abraham’s faith wasn’t just belief—it was movement. He didn’t wait until everything made sense. He didn’t wait for every answer. He stepped out, trusting that God would reveal the next turn when the time was right.
What Does a Baking Show Got to do with Faith?
Okay, I know baking is nothing like what God asked Abraham to do, but hear me out for just a sec. I’ve watched The Great British Baking Show on and off for years, and there’s one challenge that always gets me—the Technical Bake. Now, I’m not a baker and have never truly cared for the ‘process’ that is involved with baking so that’s probably one reason why I like this show because baking isn’t easy!
The bakers have no clue what they’re about to make until the moment they’re instructed. They get a list of ingredients and some extremely vague instructions—no temperature, no technique, not even a picture of what the final product is supposed to look like. And it’s never something easy! It’s a guessing game, and yet, somehow, they always manage to figure it out. Some bakes may look a little questionable, but in the end, they pull it off because the recipe’s creator gave them just enough to get through it.
And isn’t that exactly what God does with us? He rarely lays out the full plan. Instead, He gives us just enough to take the next step. It’s scary. It doesn’t always make sense. But that’s what faith is—trusting that God knows exactly what He’s doing, even when we don’t.
Practical Steps to Activate Faith Like Abraham
So how do we put this kind of faith into practice in our own lives? I want to give you a few key takeaways from Abraham’s journey that you can activate in your life:
Obey Without the Full Picture – Abraham moved forward on nothing but a word from God. Sometimes, we won’t get all the details, but God calls us to obey anyway. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take."
Hold onto God’s Promises – When doubts or uncertainties arise, we have to remind ourselves of what God has spoken, just as Abraham did. Even though challenges came, his faith grew stronger as he held onto God’s promises. We can do the same by staying rooted in Scripture. Romans 4:20-21 (NLT) says, "Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever He promises."
Step Out Even When It’s Uncomfortable – Faith isn’t about playing it safe; it’s about stepping into the unknown with confidence in God. Hebrews 11:8 (NLT) tells us, "It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going."
Let Go of What Holds You Back – Abraham had to leave behind comfort, familiarity, and security. Sometimes, we have to let go of what’s familiar to step into what God has for us. Luke 9:62 (NLT) reminds us, "Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God."
Trust That God Will Provide – Abraham’s journey was full of moments where he had to trust that God would take care of him. And every time, God came through. Philippians 4:19 (NLT) assures us, "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus."
What Does This Look Like for You?
Maybe God is calling you to step into something new—a job, a ministry, a relationship, a decision that doesn’t have all the answers yet. Maybe He’s asking you to trust Him with your finances, your future, or a difficult situation. Whatever it is, the question isn’t "Do I have all the details?" The real question is "Do I trust God enough to move forward?"
If Abraham had waited until he had every answer, he would have never left home. But because he stepped out in faith, he became the father of many nations and walked in God’s promises.
Coming this Thursday: When God Said Yes—a personal story about the leap of faith God called my husband and me to take when moving from Nashville, TN, to North Carolina. It wasn’t in our plans, and it definitely wasn’t the easy choice. But when God says go, even when you don’t have all the answers, you learn to trust that He’s already gone before you. Stay tuned!
Want to Keep Growing in Faith?
Maybe you're feeling stuck in living out activated faith in your walk with God. The past few years I've been on a faith walk—well, honestly, I've been on a faith walk my entire life, but ever since the Lord had my husband and me take a huge leap of faith to move from Nashville, TN to North Carolina in 2023—something we never imagined would happen—it’s catapulted me into living in the deeper waters of faith.
That journey has led me to write my latest study, Faith Library Institute. Every single week, we’re diving into a fresh study on what it means to truly activate faith in our everyday lives. And this isn’t a one-time study—it’s an ongoing journey that will take us all the way to the end of the year! Together, we’ll uncover how faith works, how we put it into action, and how we trust God in the unknown.
If this is something you need stirred within you, jump into this weekly study that just started last week—it just so happens to be free this entire month! Click the link here and start walking in a faith that truly moves mountains.
