Have you ever felt like you couldn’t be loved by God?
Somewhere along the way, you look at your life—your mistakes—and begin to believe there’s no way God could ever truly love you.
You’re marked.
I get it.
I carried around a necklace for many years that had a big fat D on it.
The D stood for Divorced.
And from that necklace, I believed that because I had walked through a divorce as a believer in Christ, I was forever shamed. Deemed to walk in guilt and through the lens of “What will others say about me…”
True, they don’t know my story or the why’s behind it all. But how quickly we can be to cast judgment on other people without ever realizing the damage we are creating in their lives.
But that’s a whole other article.
What’s interesting is this:
Who told me I was supposed to walk in shame and wear this D around my neck?
Not once did I ever read in Scripture,
“Well, Tracee… you can no longer be used by God. You are forever marked or branded—unusable, unloved, forgotten.”
I’ve shared this story before, and I’ll share it again—because we need to hear it.
This is not how God works.
Nor is it how He thinks.
I remember one particular day while I was getting ready and praying, when the Lord spoke these words to me:
“The enemy likes to taunt.”
That struck me, because that’s not a word I’d ever really thought about or used. Honestly, I had to look it up to see what it actually meant.
Ready?
This is going to blow your mind.
Taunt means to mock, tease, or make fun of someone in a mean or provoking way—often to get a reaction or make them feel bad.
I’m just going to step away for a second and let you simmer on that…
That is the enemy to a T.
So get this—he shows up like this:
See? God doesn’t love you anymore. I told you He wouldn’t.
You really think God still wants to use you after that?
Nothing will ever change, and it never will.
If God loved you, this would have never happened.
You messed up again. God will never forgive you.
And here’s what happens with these lies:
They provoke fear, anxiety, and shame—which is exactly where he wants us to remain. Because the goal is to get a reaction out of us.
So when any of these emotions get stirred up and we react—whether through fear or shame—he’s achieved his plan.
Let me remind you: the enemy is described as accusing and prowling.
As it says in 1 Peter 5:8, he’s looking for someone to devour—often through pressure and intimidation.
Taunts are not truth. They’re bait.
And yes, I wore that bait around my neck for too many years.
That is, until the day I was sitting at a table in a restaurant in Franklin, TN. I had just made a new connection with a prayer team ministry—where all they do is pray for people in the workplace.
This new acquaintance looked at me and said,
“You’ve been carrying around shame for far too long, and it’s not of God.”
Talk about reading my mail.
Without hesitation, she put her hand on my arm and began to pray that lie right out of my life—right there in front of the entire restaurant.
You see, if I had remained in that warped untruth, I would have continued:
being pulled out of peace
questioning God’s character and His truth
rehearsing lies instead of God’s Word
slowly being worn down spiritually and emotionally
And that is a very vulnerable place to be.
So how do you counteract taunting?
You answer it with God’s truth.
Jesus did this in the wilderness. Every taunt was met with:
“It is written…”
But here’s what I want you to realize this week, as we’re into our second week of focusing on how crazy God is about you—
Anytime the enemy tries to tell you that God doesn’t love you…
that you’ll never be good enough…
that you’ve made far too many mistakes for Him to forgive…
Speak truth.
And don’t entertain his mockery for a single second.
Send it right back to sender—where it belongs.
So here’s what we’re going to do.
I’m going to finish today by telling you who God is, how much He loves you, and just how crazy He is about you. *And don’t forget to watch this week’s Heart Talk Podcast on Wednesday where I take an even deeper dive on this subject.
Because whatever necklace you’ve been wearing—the one with that lie wrapped around your neck—it’s time for it to come off.
And I can’t think of a better day than today.
Ready?
Here we go.
